Heritage Poultry
Farm Favorite / Barred Rocks
Heritage birds are the standard breeds that are true to its parents in its true or close to natural form. These breeds are hearty, long-lived ever since the arrival of the Spanish explorers and the important source of protein until the mid-20th century. With the industrialization of chickens, many breeds were sidelines in preference to rapidly growing hybrids, which loses the genetic resources and nutritional options the Heritage birds embodies.
Our most trusted guardian, the Great Pyrenees, a very old breed used for hundreds of years by shepherds. Our three girls are the livestock guardians that keep all predators at bay, especially in the dark hours. Most essential for the small, helpless young newborns, the Great Pyrenees are the first to run to them, dedicated to guarding the babes from any danger, day and night.
